A strange mix of pseudo kitchen sink drama topped with a bit of supernatural intrusion. The depiciton of 60s north London is fascinating, still very much in the aftermath of the war, the Victorians are still around and the attitudes to immigration (european and commonwealth) arre unfamiliar/ feel only in the process of crystalising. The current Vintage cover mis-sells the book as in the same vein as Westwood the first edition's one is much better... the book cover, a scratchy painting of a young woman in classic 60s garb - black mini dress, big beaded necklace - looking over her shoulder at a north london terrace, boarded up windows a church in the background infront of a reddish/purple sky
